Where are you from?

I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and obtained my Bachelors and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Mississippi. My research was focused on the intersection between topology, graph theory, and category theory.

Please describe an experience (or 2) that helped you discover/cultivate your interest in the mathematical sciences.

From my earliest memories, I’ve always had a strong interest in mathematics. It all began in elementary school when my first-grade teacher noticed my enthusiasm and kept me engaged with progressively challenging math problems. By the end of that year, I had already gone through second-grade math while I was still in first grade. It was during this time that I learned about a math and science boarding school, and I knew immediately that’s where I wanted to be. In high school, I had the chance to test, interview, and secure admission to that very school, where I delved deeper into advanced mathematical concepts, ultimately solidifying my passion for the subject.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your career in the mathematical sciences?

I take great pride in several career achievements that stand out to me. Firstly, I was honored to serve as the Principal Investigator for a multi-year collaborative research project between my former employer and IBM TJ Watson Research. Our contributions in geospatial modeling and data science proved immensely valuable, leading to the project receiving a prestigious CIO 100 award. I was entrusted with accepting this award on behalf of our company, and we even secured a patent for one of the innovative algorithms developed during the project.

Secondly, my cumulative contributions at that organization earned me a well-deserved induction into the Science Fellows program.

Lastly, I derive immense satisfaction from the work we are doing at Freight Science. Bringing a concept from ideation to implementation and witnessing the tangible value we provide to our customers is truly rewarding. Hearing about the positive impact our platform has on our customers’ operations has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in my professional career.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your personal life?

Undoubtedly, being a husband to my wife and the birth and upbringing of my daughter are the most significant sources of pride in my personal life. Watching her grow and witnessing her develop a keen interest in math and technology has been a joyous experience.

Beyond my role as a parent, I take pride in the opportunities my career has afforded me to give back to the community. Providing financial support to low-income families, enabling them to participate in summer STEM camps organized by my former high school, and establishing two scholarships at my alma mater Ole Miss have been incredibly gratifying. I have always held the belief that “To whom much is given, much is expected,” and I am grateful to see this sentiment come to fruition in my own life.

Please share some words of wisdom/inspiration.

Throughout my own life’s journey, I’ve encountered numerous challenges and triumphs. What has consistently propelled me forward, bringing me to where I stand today, are the qualities of grit, unwavering determination, and an unshakable belief in myself. To all those embarking on their own paths, whether in mathematics or any other field, when the road seems arduous, I implore you not to surrender. Have faith in your abilities, and do not hesitate to embrace vulnerability and seek assistance when needed.

In my perspective, genuine success cannot be gauged solely by the size of your bank account or the number of degrees hanging on your walls. But rather, it is measured by the positive impact you leave upon those who surround you. Therefore, do not lose sight of the grander purpose. Continually ask yourself, “How do I wish to be remembered?” Let this question guide your endeavors and inspire you to make a lasting, meaningful impact on the world around you.
