Nadia Monrose Mills

Associate Professor of Mathematics

University of the Virgin Islands

Where are you from?

I was born on St. Croix and raised on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. My parents migrated from St. Lucia, West Indies.

Please describe an experience (or 2) that helped you discover/cultivate your interest in the mathematical sciences.

My fascination with mathematics took root at a young age. Early memories involve doing mathematics with my mother, who excelled in arithmetic.  Her passion for mathematics instilled confidence in me, and witnessing her mastery of the subject, especially fractions, convinced me that I could excel as well.

Throughout my academic journey, I encountered teachers and professors who made mathematics enjoyable and approachable. Their support fostered a belief in my ability to grasp even the most challenging concepts. The diverse tracks available within the field allowed me to persist in my mathematical pursuits.

As a mathematics educator, I find gratification in teaching the subject, but my appreciation extends to the sheer beauty and structure of mathematics itself. Pursuing a career in mathematics education research enables me to combine both aspects, allowing me to continue engaging with the subject I love.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your career in the mathematical sciences?

My proudest accomplishment involves rising to the challenge and returning to complete my PhD in mathematics education after seven years of teaching high school mathematics. This journey, though demanding, allowed me to learn more mathematics, refine my teaching skills, and learn how to create curriculum. With the attainment of this degree, I am now able to make a more significant impact on K-12 students through my work with STEM teachers and the development of curriculum for undergraduate students. Most recently, I am proud of having attained tenure and being promoted to the rank of associate professor of mathematics.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your personal life?

My greatest joy and fulfillment stems from my family. Both my immediate and extended family offer unwavering support in all my endeavors. I can genuinely attribute my success in both academic and personal aspects of life to their prayers and encouragement. Watching my three sons blossom into young men brings me immense joy and I am fortunate to be married to a dreamer, Jahmed Mills, whose numerous projects and endeavors keep our lives continually interesting.
