Where are you from?

I was born in Dallas, TX. I was raised with my other siblings by my amazing and caring grandmother.

Please describe an experience (or 2) that helped you discover/cultivate your interest in the mathematical sciences.

I found myself in a law magnet high school, with dreams of becoming a lawyer. Yet, there were subtle signs pointing to my interest in the mathematical sciences, signs I didn’t fully acknowledge. It was during my time at Morehouse College that everything changed. I met Dr. Duane Cooper, and his insistence on switching to a math major became a defining moment. I took the leap, and looking back, I’ve never regretted it. The nurturing support from the department’s faculty, along with the enriching experiences at REUs and conferences, has played a crucial role in fueling and reigniting my genuine passion for the mathematical sciences.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your career in the mathematical sciences?

The proudest accomplishments are being part of the first cohort of NSF Mathematical and Physical Science Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellows. Through this grant I’m conducting my research in mathematical medical imaging and health science, but the main staple is being able to mentor undergraduate and a few graduate students. With the invaluable assistance of my mentees and the support from the grant, we have successfully initiated and organized the Mathposium event at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) for the past two years. The primary aim of Mathposium is to showcase the research conducted by students in the math department at UTA and other campuses, offering insights into the world of mathematical science. Over the years, the event has experienced growth, highlighting the enthusiasm and commitment of our academic community. My hope is for this event to remain a cornerstone and continue thriving even beyond my postdoctoral tenure.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your personal life?

In my personal life, my most cherished achievement is attaining my PhD within my grandmother’s lifetime and before the unfortunate passing of my father. It’s a way of expressing gratitude and ensuring that their unwavering support and love during my journey were not in vain. Additionally, I’m happy to have made so many friends along the way that supported me in my endeavors and goals, and I hope they know I will always support them.

Please share some words of wisdom/inspiration.

To the students,

In the realm of mathematics, let curiosity fuel your work, and patience be the key to achieving results. Frustration is a part of the journey, so be patient with yourself. If needed, take a step back to recuperate. I wish your journeys to be filled with illuminating “ah-ha” moments and resounding success!
