MGB Initiatives Update

Hello Supporters,

We would like to take this leap day to take the opportunity to say,  “Thank you!”

Over the past eight (EIGHT!) Februaries,  we have grown from a website shining a light on our colleagues and friends to a full-blown change agent in the mathematical sciences.  The response to our grassroots efforts have been truly humbling; taking this project to heights we could only imagine back in 2016.  In large part, this is due to you; our supporters.

In addition to other resources, we would like to share two initiatives that manifested from the MGB project.

Please, continue to support us and other efforts that support marginalized communities.

Until next year,

The MGB Team

The Dr. Sylvia T. Bozeman Predoctoral Fellowship

Thanks to generous donations, the founders of the Mathematically Gifted and Black website are pleased to offer a fellowship to support predoctoral students. This fellowship is named in honor of Dr. Sylvia T. Bozeman a champion and advocate for women and minorities in the mathematical sciences.

Since 2020, we have been able to award 55 fellowships to graduate students in the mathematical sciences.  Through your generous support, almost $25,000 has gone directly to support future mathematicians.

MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship

In 2022, in close partnership with SIAM, The MGB-SIAM Early Career (MSEC) Fellowship was created.   The MSEC Fellowship recognizes the achievements of early career applied mathematicians–particularly those belonging to racial and ethnic groups historically excluded from the mathematical sciences in the United States—and provides support for professional activities and career development. The fellowship reflects a joint commitment by MGB and SIAM to promote long-term engagement of fellows within SIAM and continued success within the wider applied mathematics and computational sciences community.  To date, there have been 26 MSEC Fellows (inaugural, 2022 fellows pictured below).
