Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Tennessee State University

Where are you from?

I am from Westchester, New York (30 minutes away from New York City), where I graduated from Woodlands High School. I completed my undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, earning a BS in Mathematics. I went on to North Carolina Central University to earn my MS in Mathematics and then to Howard University where I earned my Ph.D. in mathematics.

Please describe an experience (or 2) that helped you discover/cultivate your interest in the mathematical sciences.

My discovery for the love of mathematics is learning how everything can be described as a mathematical equation. I was first told about this as a middle school student visiting a pre-calculus class in high school. The teacher, Ms. Golden, explained that everything has a pattern, and that pattern can be expressed as mathematical equations. From that moment, I started to look for patterns everywhere I went and viewed the world through mathematics. This mindset stayed with me as I entered High School, joining the math club and participating in competitions with the surrounding schools.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your career in the mathematical sciences?

My most proud accomplishment at the moment is earning my doctorate from Howard University. Knowing the statistics on how many people from underrepresented groups have a Ph.D., I am proud to be an example to the next generation.

What is/are your most proud accomplishment(s) regarding your personal life?

December of 2022, I proposed to my fiancé Shani Date, who has been a pillar of strength and peace as I started and completed my Ph.D.

Please share some words of wisdom/inspiration.

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think. – Albert Einstein.

Education is more than just the transmission of knowledge. It aims to help you to think critically, ask questions and become independent learners in a complex world. Thus, ask questions and do not apologize for wanting a deeper understanding in your life.
